Kurian Joseph, Ghose sworn in as SC judges

Justices Kurian Joseph and Pinaki Chandra Ghose were sworn in as Supreme Court judges on Friday. Chief Justice of India, Altamas Kabir administered the oath of office.

Justices Kurian Joseph and Pinaki Chandra Ghose were sworn in as Supreme Court judges on Friday. Chief Justice of India, Altamas Kabir administered the oath of office.

Now, the strength of SC judges has gone up to 28. The total sanctioned strength of the apex court is 31.

Justice Joseph was the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh and Justice Ghose, the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh before their elevation to the apex court.

Justice Kurian Joseph was born on November 30, 1953. He studied at St. Joseph’s U.P. School, Chengal, Kalady, St. Sebastin’s High School, Kanjoor, Bharath Matha College, Thrikkakara, Sree Sankara College, Kalady and the Kerala Law Academy Law College, Thiruvanathapuram.

He began his legal practice in 1979. He was a member of the Academic Council, Kerala University (1977-78), was general secretary of Kerala University Union (1978), was the Senate member of Cochin University (1983-85). He also served as the Government Pleader (1987) and as Additional Advocate General (1994-96). He was designated as Senior Advocate in 1996. He was a member of the Board of Studies, Indian Legal Thought of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam (1996).

He served as president in the  Kerala Judicial Academy from 2006 to 2008 and was chairman of Kerala High Court Legal Services Committee from 2006 to 2009 and was chairman of Lakshadweep Legal Services Authority in 2008. He was the executive chairman of Kerala State Legal Services Authority, chairman of Indian Law Institute Kerala Branch, chairman of Indian Law Reports (Kerala Series), executive member of NUALS (National University of Advanced Legal Studies) and a Judge in the High Court of Kerala since July 12, 2000.

He served twice as Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Kerala  and has been nominated as Member to the Legal Education Committee of Bar Council of India. He took oath as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on February 8, 2010.

Justice Ghose is a B.Com graduate from St Xavier’s College and took LLB from the University of Calcutta. He enrolled as an advocate on November 30, 1976 and later practised in civil, commercial, constitutional and company matters in the Calcutta High Court from 1976. He was appointed a permanent Judge of High Court at Calcutta on July 17, 1997.

Justice Ghose is the president of the governing body of the Ramakrishna Mission Sikshana Mandir, Belur and president of the governing body of Ramakrishna Mission, Sikra Kulingram, Basirhat, West Bengal.

He is also the vice president of the Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Ramakrishna Mission, Kolkata and vice president of the governing body of Swami Vivekanananda Ancestral House, Ramakrishna Mission in Kolkata. He was also a member of the executive council of the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. He is also the Chancellor of NALSAR Law University, Hyderabad.
